This year on emuse

Here's a quick run-through of some of the fun stuff that's happened on emuse this year.

It started off in January with some Japanese stamp carving patterns, and a week of Russian dolls.

In February there were some different styles of Valentines.

In March and April it was all about decor, with the makeover of my bedroom.

In May the decor theme continued with cushions.

June was about photography and birthday cards. Then in July it was one of my favourite projects of the year - my clay Clangers scene!

In August it was all about postcards.

September was about relaxation, drawing and a few online challenges.

October involved more drawing, as part of an online challenge, and some photography.

November was photography, reading, and a few holiday related things. December had some posts about my holiday in Italy, and some Christmassy stuff!

This month I have been mostly...

Reading:
I hadn't read as much as usual this year until I reached December. At the end of November I had only read about 20 books, but then I got a sudden reading spurt, starting by reading a book in one evening, and read at least a book a day for over a week! And I'm on track to at least equal last year's 44 books, I think. I particularly enjoyed Mr Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, and I finished off reading the Moomin books by Tove Jansson.

Watching:
The Bridge has been amazing this series! I kept feeling so sorry for Saga with everything that was happening to her.

Eating:
All the Christmassy foods!

Doing:
A few Christmas nights out with friends. And I took part in my first ever Secret Santa!

Gift-giving

I actually quite enjoyed the process of Christmas shopping this year! I started off by buying a couple of things for my nephew in Italy, did a little bit of online shopping, then on a trip to Edinburgh popped in to a couple of shops I love and happened to find some things that I thought would make good presents.
I thought the Charles Rennie Mackintosh wrapping paper I'd got a few months ago in Glasgow was reminiscent of Christmas trees, so I decided to use this to wrap the presents, even though the colours were a bit unconventional! I emphasised the Christmas tree theme by making simple Christmas tree gift tags from white card.

I'd got my nephew a book with mix-and-match animals from Italy, and I just happened to see a set of slot-together animals that were illustrated in a similar style, and a book that I bought him online also had illustrations that went quite well.

I thought the guinea pig Pride & Prejudice book I got for my sister-in-law was so hilariously cute that I ended up ordering another copy as a secret Santa gift for someone else!

Christmas Clangers

Christmas has arrived on the Clangers planet!
One of my favourite childhood TV series, the Clangers, returned to TV this year, so it was only natural that my Christmas cards would have a Clangers theme!

So, to my Clangers scene, I added the pipe-cleaner trees I made last year, a present made from a piece of wood wrapped in paper, and, one of my first ever polymer clay pieces from back in the early 1980s, a Santa. I based him on one in the Fimo book I bought at the same time as my first ever blocks of Fimo.
I photographed them, and sent the pictures off to Moo to have them printed - which now makes me realise I should have had a Sky-Moo in the pictures too!

A Scandi Christmas

Last winter I searched in vain for a white Christmas tree that I liked and that wasn't too expensive, both before Christmas and in the sales, and didn't find anything. This summer, I found one at a car boot sale for only a few pounds!
This is the first time that I've had a full-sized tree! Since my student years I've had a little green tree a couple of feet high, in a burlap sack base, and I've been happy with that up until now. But it's great to have a bigger tree to decorate.
My only worry was whether I would have enough decorations to fill the tree, and, if I did, whether the decorations would match. Luckily I found a bag of silver and red decorations my mum had given me a few years ago, then I added various other matching decorations - a crocheted owl by my friend Ingrid and knitted Dala horse by my friend Jane, my Scandinavian-style red and white Hama bead decorations, a few Japanese dolls, some Ikea heart decorations, and a couple of decorations I got in Austria many years ago. On top of the tree I put a paper geisha that I made. I love that the tree has some items that have sentimental meaning but still has a coherent colour scheme.
I decided to position the tree in my porch area, which was renovated last year, as the white tree looked so good there and would be the first thing I see when I come in the door. I added a white Dala horse with a decoration around its neck, some tiny dolls that I made this year from a kit from Tiger, my Ikea tree that I painted white, with some red heart lights that were in the bag of decorations from Mum, the stocking I've had since I was wee, and a Scandinavian doll I found in a charity shop years ago.
